Success Story

December Quinn reports the sale of her novel Personal Demons (Face-Lift 240) to Juno Books, for a 2008 release. She assures me there are zombies in the book.

Hooray!!!!

You know what could be fun and eduational, Dec Quinn? Could you post here the query that made it all happen? We saw your original. We saw EE's version. What version did Juno see?

Okay, this is the query:

Dear Ms. Guran:

I don't know if you remember me, we had a brief correspondence over the whole [discussion on a reader blog] situation. You made Juno Books sound to me like the perfect publisher for my novel PERSONAL DEMONS, an approximately 82,000-word urban fantasy set in an unnamed American city.

When therapist Megan Chase promises listeners to her new radio call-in show she'll slay their personal demons, they believe her. So do the personal demons.

Megan doesn't know she's the only human alive without a personal demon on her shoulder. This, coupled with her psychic abilities, makes her a valuable weapon for any demon "family" lucky enough to gain her allegiance. It also makes her a serious threat not just to the personal demons, but to a soul-sucking Legion of Hell known as The Accuser. The Accuser already has an old score to settle with Megan, and sees this as the perfect time to do it.

But Megan isn't without allies as she's plunged back into a world she forgot existed. A member of a competing demon family sees Megan as his ticket to power, and sets about both protecting and seducing her with devilish intensity.

Can Megan, her new demon lover, a witch with poor social skills, and three cockney guard demons named Malleus, Maleficarum, and Spud defeat not only The Accuser, the personal demons, and the ghosts of Megan's past, but the reporter who threatens to destroy Megan's career as well?

Personal Demons is a stand-alone novel, but is planned as the first in a series.

As December Quinn, I've published (list of credits). I am an American currently living in the UK, and dreaming of driving on the right side of the road again.

Per your guidelines, I've attached a short synopsis and the first three chapters to this email. I'd be happy to send the complete manuscript of Personal Demons for your review. Thank you for your time, and I look forward to hearing from you.

Regards,

Me

"Can Megan, her new demon lover, a witch with poor social skills,"

I had to read this twice -- I only point it out because it was the only gripe I had with this query.

Well done, you!

Congratulations DQ! That is wonderful wonderful news and I am looking forward to reading your book as it was one of my absolute favorite queries both here and at Miss. Snarks (it was there too, right? Or am I getting confused again? I haven't had my meds yet...).

It is exciting to see a query I liked get published. It makes me feel like part of the process.

Fantastic! :-) Great query (with a nice vein of humor running through it).

Thanks for posting the query, and please let us know when next year it's coming out.
