Spam

For the past couple months I'm getting dozens of spam comments every day, sent to random posts on the blog. I can continue reading and deleting them or I can use word verification or I can set it so only members of the blog can comment. The latter would require those who comment to become members, and I have no idea how one becomes a member.
Whaddaya think?

One must become a member through of series of initiation challenges. I'm thinking a labyrinth race combined with - wait for it - a drinking contest.

Or just word verification. That'd be fine with me.

I had this same thing happen to me. As soon as I put word verifcation up again they all disappeared...

I say go with word verification.

Word Verification doesn't bother me. Members Only would eliminate the anons, right? There a vital part of the organization--writers need to hear all comments, good or bad.

Start with word verification and if that doesn't stop the spam, escalate to membership? I've just been too lazy to set up OpenID.

the member thing would no doubt involve signing in with passwords etc which is not terribly appealing. word verification would be less hassle

I'd say word verification would be enough, if that would stop the spam? Having to sign up might put people off, but wading through spam doesn't sound like a lot of fun, so it's a happy medium.

I believe that the membership option only allows members to even see the blog, so that would be self-defeating.

If the spam is getting out of hand, switching the word verification back on may be the best way to get some control back without curtailing new visitors and anonymous postings.

I think to be a member you have to have a blog of your own, or to sign up with google for a google account (same as gmail?) It's a lot of hoops to go through if you have enough (too many) email addresses already... but dealing with dozens of spam comments every day sounds like far too much work; I'd never wish that on you for my convenience. You are amazing for even considering it.

okay, at some point I'll put word verification on and leave it for a week. Then I'll turn it off and see if the spam returns. If it does we may be stuck with wv.

No worries about word ver. I'd hate getting all that spam if I were you.

I actually kind of love word ver. For example: Mine is "priagr", which I would assume is the little blue pill for when you really want to get her knocked up.

Yes, but NOW you'll be getting all those emails from people who HAVE to comment just to let people know what their verification word was and who need to define it.

For example, mine is purlisme. I'm guessing that makes me an avid crocheter. Illuminating, no? <:o)

Here's to a spam-free 2010!

I refuse to become a member unless spanking is involved.

Word verification should sort the spam problem out and since you're not Mr Instant Comments, it wouldn't make too much difference to how things work.

I see, even now, that 'catur' has appeared below my comment box — so I'll just type that in and carry on as normal.

Having members would be problematic, btw. I'm guessing they'd have access to the editing options of the blog, and given that 'they' are in fact 'us', there's every possibility we might seeks to punish you for your years of wickedness. Plus, having members is no way to lure the innocent to their doom.

Word verification is extremely discriminatory against dyslexics. Spam is doog. I mean good.

Whirlochre seems to envisage a different kind of membership than what I'm guessing you had in mind. Could be fun, although I'm not into spanking myself.

Word verification seems to work fine on my blog to stop spam and it doesn't annoy me on other people's blogs.

And when you get word verfication like priagra, it adds to the fun.

Word verification seems like the most reasonable alternative.

Just make sure people have an account. That's what I do. It helps limit the crazy.
