The minions return, bringing mirth and a wealth of web bon-mots for the new year. And don't think I didn't notice that Evil managed two (2!) submissions, indicating that all is well in Evildum. Let the discussion ensue, prith-ee.
I found all of the efforts very amusing and informative. Being quite new to the technical side of writing I was a bit clueless about backstory. Reading all of the posts cleared things up for me in a very entertaining way. Thank you EE for creating, moderating and maintaining such a painless and inventive educational tool. This is way fun.
In view of the time zone differences, it's probably best that I post a q & a about back-story in general, and everyone can stick in their two cents worth at their convenience.
Backstory: I was reading Les Miserables, and he stopped in the middle of a chase through dark streets to say who had lived there 300 years ago. That, and he took a 50-page time out every so often to describe in detail people that disappeared 15 pages later, the whole battle of Waterloo in detail sans map, the inside of a convent right down to the wallpaper--I still haven't finished. I need to, but I may skip the backstory this time.

Bad back story brought the minions out of the woodwork. I look forward to reading all of these.
This was fun. I enjoyed all of them but I couldn't find something intelligent to say on some of them. (Some might say, on any of them.)
I'm with Robin - it would be interesting to discuss this.

Meri
I bey EE is watching whatever sport is happening right now.
Steelers play today. I'll be cheering them.
This was a good exercise.
This was so much fun. Especially since this week it was my turn to sift the slush pile.

Painless? Oh my, RW Glover. Stick around. You will feel the pain. :)
I don't get it. Where are all the characters with bad backs? I thought these were supposed to be chiropractic fantasies.
Had a lot of fun reading them all! (Shout out -- I have to admit I liked Meri's best.)
Ooh, a discussion. We haven't had one of those in awhile. That would be fun!
You know, I think this was genius.
Great skill can be learned from doing things wrong on purpose.
It's different than learning from a mistake because there is a certain lack of awareness.
In doing this badly on purpose look at what great writing came out of the woodwork. Better writing than is often submitted for review.
I KILLED MOLES for you and I STILL didn't get the pole position????
These were a treat. And I'm with everyone about a duiscussion.
This was a really fun exercise.
Anon, our EE is a genius...
Now that I've buttered you up, may we have a back-story discussion sometime one afternoon or early evening?
And may we do another screw-up kind of a thing for the exercise this coming weekend? I loved doing this one.

Thanks!
I;m looking forward to that discussion. Should one of us send in a Q, or will you use one that's already come up in comments?
I'll come up with one.
I really enjoyed these - some wonderful examples!
I think Victor Hugo would have loved this.
