When Cherry Rosenberg relit his pipe and took shallow, repetitious draws, strawberry flavored smoke pulsed out of its bowl and leaked from the corners of his mouth, gathering in the air above him like a filthy cloud. The effect was intentional, creating the aura of a thoughtful man in a world too busy to stop for such contemplative nonsense.
Rosenbaum was a renowned psychiatrist, you see, with a patient that seemed skeptical and ill at ease.
“You’re sucking on your mother’s nipple, you know… when you do that light-the-pipe thing.”
The stately gentleman-- who had come pleading in a desperate state to see Rosenstein-- lay on the couch with folded arms across a well proportioned belly, watching Cherry the way a therapist would watch a mental patient. Grey muttonchops framed his cherubic, bespectacled face that had confusion in vexed and ancient wrinkles written in the brows.
“I most certainly am not! The tobacco is slightly moist and requires a bit of effort to entice into a fine burn.”
The bespectacled man squinted. “No. The manner in which you are drawing through that stem is definitely titular. Are you really a psychiatrist? Your get up is a spectacular display of professional mimicry. From the Freudian goatee to the corduroy, you seem to be trying too hard to be who you claim to be.”
“You have come to see me, have you not?” asked Rosencrantz.
“I have, but I didn’t realize you’d display such hackneyed affectations so blatantly. It reeks of insecurity. As if your erudite façade were a projection of your need for self-importance mixing with your fears of failure, obviously instilled upon you by a severe and over-lording father.”
“I was merely lighting my pipe before we got ourselves started,” Rosenberger proclaimed. “Are you ready to begin?”
“Did you not get enough of your mother’s teat as an infant? Is that why you suckle on that thing?”
“You sir, are incorrigible,” said Rosy Cherrypit.
The mutton chopped man smiled. His body sank into the couch.
“I’m ready Doc,” he said. “Do whatever it takes.”
